Communities built on Mining & Logging.
Did you know that Maple Valley and Black Diamond have industry and recreation in their roots?
Settled in 1879 by three men who were improving a trail from Seattle, the Maple Valley area became home to sawmills that processed the lumber harvested from local forests. These sawmills also helped build the homes of the growing community. In Black Diamond, it was coal that was king! Built as a company town for the Black Diamond Coal Company, the coal mined from this area was said to be some of the best in the world. It also provided jobs for thousands of European immigrants that came to America looking for economic relief.
