Washington Han Mu Do - Traditional Martial Arts Excellence

What is Han Mu Do? It's a comprehensive martial arts system comprised for the study of empty hand techniques, the study of weapons and philosophy powered by ergonomic movement, physical strength and ki power, and the techniques of the left and right side of the body.  And there is only one school that teaches it west of the Mississippi and that is Washington Han Mu Do right here in Maple Valley, owned by  Eric VanderWaal and Rocky Johnson.

Last Wednesday we gathered for a ribbon cutting between classes and judging from the number of students, Han Mu Do is very popular.  In fact, Washington Han Mu Do, has been a chamber member for several months but both Eric and Rocky are so busy with their day jobs and evening classes, they couldn’t schedule a ribbon cutting until now.  They have been able to do what many of us would love to do; they’ve taken their hobby/sport and made it in to a viable business.  Their mission is “to create an atmosphere of self-discovery and personal growth through the techniques and practices set forth by the World Han Mu Do Association.”  Both Eric and Rocky are Black Belts; Eric is a 2nd Dan Black Belt and Rocky is a 3rd Dan Black Belt; both are also black belts in Tae Kwon Do.

Like many martial arts, Han Mu Do increases physical fitness and self-defense skill, and according to the mission statement “encourages the foundation of high personal standards, and empowers students with control over self (body, mind, and spirit) resulting in a happier and more successful life.”  Eric and Rocky place a strong emphasis on discipline and respect, stress relief, and fitness and in creating a fun place for the entire family to train together.  In fact, Eric’s entire family is involved -  his wife Lenor, daughter Hanna, and son Jake, all train in Han Mu Do.

Washington Han Mu Do offers adult and kids classes with an opportunity to evaluate a class at no charge before signing up.  The fundamentals include learning blocks, kicks, strikes, wrist releases, and proper falls. As kids advance they learn self-defense techniques such as joint locks, throws, counters, grappling, ground defense, and weapons. The classes focus on respect and positive attitudes both towards their instructors and their fellow students.  All the classes are designed to teach self-defense in a traditional martial arts setting along with discipline, respect, and self-confidence.
