President's Message

Posted by Tanya Neilsen

Fall is officially here, you can see it outside in the beautiful colors of the fall leaves and the air is a bit crisper in the morning.  I don’t know about you but I LOVE Fall!  It is a time of change, beauty and unknowns.  What will the next season bring?

I have been President for a few months now and I am writing my first President’s message.  I cannot believe how quickly these first few months have flown by.  It reminds me just how precious time is and once it is gone, you cannot get it back.  I challenge you to take advantage of the fall and this time of change to go out of your comfort level a bit, you may be amazed at what you discover.

First, I would like to say “Thank You” to Past President Bryan Kelley for his amazing leadership these past 2 years and taking the board and chamber through the retirement of Sue VanRuff, the hiring process of a new CEO and hiring and getting our new CEO Erica Dial settled in.  Bryan, you made it all look seamless, but anyone who has been through a process like this knows it takes a lot of time and effort. Going into this there were so many unknowns, now a year later we couldn’t have been more blessed. Erica Dial has taken on her role as CEO of the Greater Maple Valley Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce effortlessly.  Again, thank you to Bryan, Sue and Erica for each stepping out of your comfort zone and seeing the chamber into a new wonderful chapter.

But that isn’t the only change I’m seeing - look around.  There is change all around us.  We are seeing our school district going through a complete transformation.  The up-coming opening of a first-class high school, a new Lake Wilderness Elementary, a refitting of the current high school and Jr. High into middle schools and a refitting of the two current middle schools into elementary schools.  Thank you to the amazing leadership of our school district in taking on such a huge undertaking and making it look so easy.

Last month I had the pleasure of attending the ground-breaking ceremony of the Ten Trails Community in Black Diamond.  This process began over 20 years ago, by a group of people with a vision for the future of Black Diamond.  The road has not always been easy but with care and dedication we are now seeing the vision take shape.

Last night, Maple Valley swore in Laura Philpot as our new City Manager.  Congratulation Laura!  I am looking forward to see what you have in store for Maple Valley.  Thank you to the Maple Valley City Council for your leadership and vision throughout this transition.

Where am I going with this you ask? I challenge you to get involved.  Step out of your comfort zone and take a chance at something new, make a difference.  Change begins with you.

Thank you for electing me to the Board of the Greater Maple Valley Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce as well as allowing me to be your current President.  It is truly an honor and I look forward to working hard for each of you.  Please do not hesitate to contact me anytime for any reason!
