This position is responsible for providing analyses, evaluations, verifications and recommendation of accounting controls to increase district effectiveness and efficiencies. There is a responsibility to investigate areas of concern and to safeguard the district’s assets against fraud and waste; and help provide documentation and/or solutions for deficiencies found. In addition, this position shares responsibility for ensuring that monthly payroll processing is completed in an accurate and timely manner.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the maintenance and implementation of financial budget systems.
Assist in the annual budget preparation process.
Process budget transfers.
Prepare monthly financial statements.
Prepare financial projections.
Perform internal audits.
Maintain the district chart of accounts.
Maintain accounting controls.
Supervise department staff.
Assist in training school and departmental staff to perform their accounting duties.
Provide ongoing advice and direction to staff on accounting procedures and policy, including ASB.
Oversee all state, federal and private audits.
Manage and assist with third party point of sale (POS) systems.
Prepare tax returns.
Perform detailed financial reviews.
Prepare a variety of financial accounting and budgetary reports for submission to supervisor, district personnel, school board and various state or local agencies.
Accumulate data and prepare narrative explanations using spreadsheet databases and word processing software.
Analyze various activities and programs to ascertain whether they comply with board directives and applicable federal, state, or local laws and regulations.
Evaluate and appraise the effectiveness of district accounting controls and the extent to which assets are safeguarded against fraud, waste, and abuse.
Attest to the reliability of financial information used for board and management decision-making.
Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
Conduct a strong central services public relations image including telephone procedures as well as public contact and pride in document productions.
Assist other personnel, with related tasks, as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities and for the enhancement of daily operations of the school district.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration, or a closely related field is required.
Work experience as an accountant including general ledger functions, forecasting and budgeting.
Strong attention to detail and good analytical skills.
Extensive knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to accounting and internal auditing principals, techniques, and procedures.
Demonstrates ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data: ability to detect errors and verify data: ability to exercise independent judgment; and ability to make well-founded recommendations.
Demonstrate ability to perform a variety of cost/benefit analyses and calculations.
Knowledge of spreadsheets software and ability to and create complex formulas.
Communicate effectively with staff and the general public through strong written and oral communication skills.
Assist with problem solving and developing alternative strategies.
Demonstrate ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.
Demonstrate ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
Demonstrate ability to organize, set priorities, plan, and coordinate work and maintain a functional work area.
Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful and courteous professional working relationships with a variety of people.
