Emergency Preparedness Planning
Preparedness is the best defense against disaster!
An emergency can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your residence. What would you do if basic services –water, gas, electricity, or telephones – were cut off? Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after an emergency, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days. Would you and your family be prepared to cope with the emergency until help arrives? The best way to cope is to PREPARE NOW! Once an emergency hits, you won’t have time to shop for supplies. If you have gathered supplies in advance, you can endure an evacuation or home confinement.
The best way to cope with an emergency is to prepare before it happens. Don’t procrastinate! Start working on your family’s plan today and know the disaster plan of your school district and your work place.
Make A Plan:
Your family may not be together when a disaster strikes so it is important to plan in advance: how you will get to a safe place; how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations. Go to www.Ready.gov or www.pse.com/safety/GetPrepared for more information
Almost 40% of small businesses that close due to a disaster event never re-open. (Washington State Emergency Management website). “Open for Business” is a planning workbook to assist in creating key supplier, vendor, and employee lists, identifying critical business functions, a business self-assessment and how-to’s for identifying critical resources to protect your business.
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) can address the entire nation on very short notice in case of a grave threat or national emergency.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio (www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from a nearby National Weather Service office to specially configured NOAA weather radio receivers. Determine if NOAA Weather Radio is available where you live. If so, consider purchasing a NOAA weather radio receiver.
Regional Public Information Network (RPIN) www.rpin.org/rpinweb: RPIN is your one-stop resource for news alerts from more than 75 government, transportation, utility, health and emergency response agencies serving citizens in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Sign up to receive e-mail alerts and pager headlines from RPIN partners and get helpful tips to prepare for emergencies.
To enhance public safety, a free Wireless Emergency Alerts service is rolling out. WEA messages are text-like alert messages received by your mobile device during an emergency in your area. The purpose of WEA is to provide an increasingly mobile American public with a free and fast way to receive critically important information. Check with your cellular service provider for detailed information.
