On behalf of the entire board of directors, I want to express our sincerest sympathy to the entire Wasmund and Sutton family. Words cannot express our loss and grief. Sandi exemplified the heart and soul of our community and this organization. She was much loved; we are so grateful to her family for sharing her with all of us. Sincerely, Sue VanRuff, Executive Director
Sandi: Me And My Gang
Sandi gave so much of her precious time and energy to the chamber over the years, it is just so hard to imagine she isn’t about to charge through the office door with another great idea. And she had so many great ideas.
Sandi was instrumental in instituting our tiered membership program and Maple Valley’s shop local campaign. Over the years, she nearly single handedly coordinated our annual president’s dinner and auction; she pulled all-nighters at the annual ‘Hooked On Fishing’ Derby; she represented us at Chamber Day in Olympia; followed me to out-of-state chamber conferences; drove our derby float in the Maple Valley Days Parade, had the most fun at our Wacky & Wild Golf Challenge; and as president of the board in 2006, convinced a very reluctant board to line-dance to her favorite country song, "Me And My Gang.”
Wherever she went, she had a gang. She gathered people to her; she was a people magnet. Truly, Sandi never met a stranger – everyone was her friend. She could take any situation and make it into an occasion. I used to refer to it as Sandi holding court, at the center of everything, making sure everyone was involved, paying attention, and having a good time.
Sandi brought that energy to the board of directors. Sandi has been an active member of this chamber for years as owner of All Service Plumbing with her husband, Jimmy. She joined the Board of Directors in 2004 and served as Board Chair from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007. Before retiring off the board in 2011, Sandi served as a Director, Treasurer, and Vice-President. She led with passion and authority. So very often, she referenced something she learned at one of our conferences – be The CEO of You - Take It, Leave It, or Change It – and that’s how Sandi lived her life.
Sandi was also so very generous – she gave, and gave, and then would give some more challenging others to do the same. Her favorite causes became her missions. That was evidenced by the many projects she took on at the chamber. Since she wasn’t quite done with a couple of them after officially retiring off the board, Sandi continued her work as our contracted Membership Marketing Rep. There was no one better suited for that position which of course, she helped to create.
The hardest thing to do this week is remember to breathe. The grief, the shock, the emptiness, literally took our breath away. A cruel twist of fate put her in the middle of a senseless, meaningless, and reckless event that stole Sandi’s life from all of us but we pledge to keep her spirit alive in this community.
