On
Friday, October 21, chamber members helped Mary Fuhr, owner of Maple Valley
Pediatric Therapy, celebrate the opening of her new office in the Capstone Building
near Wilderness Village. The clinic brings
much needed quality pediatric therapy services to our greater community.
The
clinic's Occupational Therapists have
specialty training and years of experience serving children with
neuro-developmental concerns, autism spectrum and sensory processing disorders,
cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, handwriting concerns and assistive technology
needs. They provide family - centered
care in a beautiful new center that is fun for children and relaxing for
parents.
Pediatric
occupational therapy focuses on the "occupation" of children -- to learn, move,
play, communicate, develop relationships and gain greater independence in
taking care of themselves. Children with
special needs or challenges may need extra help to meet these developmental
milestones. Children learn best through
play. An occupational therapist uses swings, games, floor activities and play
to help increase strength, balance, coordination, body awareness, interaction,
eye-hand coordination, self-help, and social skills.
Mary
Gengler Fuhr, OTR/L has been a Pediatric Occupational Therapist for over 25
years. Her experience includes serving children, families, and educators at
Children's Therapy Center of Kent, Rosemary White's clinic, and the Fife and
Kent School Districts. Mary was an instructor in the Occupational Therapy
Assistant Program at Green River Community College and has taught workshops at
hospitals and clinics around the country. She is the co-author of the book and
video, "Pediatric Massage for the Child with Special Needs". Mary is
a Certified Infant Massage Instructor and Yogafit Instructor. She has extensive
training in Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) and Sensory Integration (SI)
assessment and treatment.
